He asked for and was granted a loan of 31,000 naira in 1974 to build his first home in Yola, which he then rented out. He bought another parcel of land and constructed a second home using the rent proceeds.
He persisted in doing so, amassing a sizable portfolio of real estate in Yola, Nigeria He began farming 2,500 hectares of land close to Yola in 1981 to establish a maize and cotton farm. The company ran into financial trouble and shut down in 1986.

Abubakar entered politics for the first time in the early 1980s, working behind the scenes on Bamanga Tukur’s governorship campaign. Tukur was then the managing director of the Nigeria Ports Authority. He raised money for the cause and canvassed for votes on Tukur’s behalf.
He eventually met General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, who served as Supreme Headquarters’ Chief of Staff from 1976 to 1979, toward the end of his time in customs. Yar’Adua drew Abubakar into the political gatherings that were now occuring often in his Lagos residence, giving birth to the People’s Front of Nigeria.
Politicians including Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, Baba Gana Kingibe, Bola Tinubu, Sabo Bakin Zuwo, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Abdullahi Aliyu Sumaila, and Abubakar Koko were members of the People’s Front.
In the run-up to the Third Nigerian Republic, Abubakar was chosen as the Peoples Front of Nigeria’s national vice-chairman in 1989. At the 1989 Constituent Assembly, which was convened to deliberate on a new constitution for Nigeria, Abubakar was elected to represent his district.
Eventually, the military government refused to register the People’s Front (none of the organizations that applied were registered), and it merged with the Social Democratic Party, which was established by the government (SDP).
Abubakar joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 1998, went on to win the nomination for governor of Adamawa State in the December 1998 governorship elections, but before taking office, he agreed to serve as General Olusegun Obasanjo’s running mate. Obasanjo went on to win the 1999 presidential election, ushering in the Fourth Nigerian Republic.
Atiku Abubakar As Nigeria Vice President
Abubakar Atiku was sworn in as Nigeria’s vice president on May 29, 1999. His first tenure was primarily distinguished by his position as Chairman of the National Economic Council and head of the National Council on Privatization, where he and Nasir El Rufai oversaw the sale of hundreds of loss-making and inadequately run governmental firms.
Stormy relations between Abubakar and President Obasanjo characterized his second term as vice president. As a result of President Olusegun Obasanjo’s purported attempt to modify key articles of the constitution in order to run for office again (Third Term Agenda), Abubakar and Obasanjo engaged in a bitter public feud in 2006.
The People’s Democratic Party briefly split over the issue brought on by the defeated constitutional amendment. In the end, the National Assembly rejected the modifications that would have allowed Obasanjo to seek reelection.
In preparation for the 2007 elections, Abubakar split with his boss Olusegun Obasanjo in 2006 and joined the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
A team from the Northern Youth Leaders Forum reportedly paid a visit to Obasanjo on March 30, 2014, at his house in Abeokuta, where they begged him to “forgive your former vice-president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar of whatever political sin or crime he might have committed against you.”
Obasanjo replied, “As a leader and father, I have no grudge against anybody and, if there is, I have forgiven them all,” according to a remark from him.

Abubakar’s son Aliyu received the chieftaincy title of Waziri of Adamawa in June 2017, replacing his own title of Turaki.
