Ayinde Bakare was a legendary Nigerian musician who was known for his exceptional dexterity on the guitar and his unique fusion of traditional and Western music styles. He was born on January 1, 1919, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria and died on July 25, 1972, in Lagos, Nigeria.
Early life and education
Ayinde Bakare was born into a family of musicians and started playing the guitar at a very young age. He attended St. Peter’s Primary School in Abeokuta and later went to Methodist Boys High School in Lagos where he continued to hone his musical skills.
Career
Ayinde Bakare started his music career in the 1940s and quickly became one of Nigeria’s most prominent guitarists. He gained popularity for his unique style of music which blended traditional Yoruba music with Western styles such as jazz and blues.
He was a member of the Old Beats band which played at various clubs in Lagos. In the 1950s, he formed his own band, the Meranda Orchestra, which became very popular in Nigeria.
Ayinde Bakare recorded many hit songs during his career including “Omo Lere Aiye”, “Oro Ye Gbe Mi Ga”, “Ise Oluwa”, “Sojoji”, “Owu Nkankan”, and “Iba F’Alade Ogo”. He also released several albums including “Ayinde Bakare and His Meranda Orchestra”
