Lauren Lovette Biography
Lauren Lovette is an American ballet dancer and choreographer, she was a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, she was born on November 10, 1991.
Lauren was raised in California with her family and friends. She began her ballet training at the Cary Ballet Conservatory of North Carolina when she was 11 years old, having always been passionate about dancing, singing, and modeling. Lauren Lovette Early Life and Education
Lovette was born in Thousand Oaks, California, and started her ballet education at the age of eleven. She went on to
study at the Cary Ballet Conservatory in North Carolina,
followed by the School of American Ballet.
Lauren Lovette Career
In 2009, Lovette joined the New York City Ballet as an apprentice. 2010 saw her accepted into the company’s corps de ballet, and 2013 saw her elevated to soloist. She received a promotion to principle dancer in 2015. At the New York City Ballet, she has performed a wide range of repertoire, including both classic and contemporary pieces by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Peter Martins, Justin Peck, Alexei Ratmansky, and Christopher Wheeldon.
In addition, she gave a performance for Michelle and Barack Obama as part of the 2014 Kennedy Center Honors honoring Patricia McBride. With her piece For Clara, commissioned by New York City Ballet, Lovette made her debut as a choreographer in her own right in 2016.
She then produced two more works for the company, Not Our Fate (2017) and The Shaded Line (2019), as well as others for Damian Woetzel’s Vail Dance Festival and American Ballet Theatre’s Studio Company. In 2019 she also worked as the Vail Dance Festival’s Artist-in-Residence. Musician Kate Davis, poet Andrea Gibson, and the designers Zac Posen, Narciso Rodriguez, Fernando Garcia, and Laura Kim of Oscar de la Renta/MONSE have all worked with her.
The New York Times declared about her choreography in 2019 that, “Ms. Lovette’s quest to transform ballet inside out has a sense of urgency. She has essentially passed the threshold from beauty to power.”
Lovette quit the New York City Ballet in October 2021, saying she was “very thrilled about the future” and that she would have “the leisure to completely pursue new creative initiatives as both a choreographer and dancer.” She performed Robbins’ Opus 19/The Dreamer and Ratmansky’s Namouna, A Grand Divertissement at her final performance, which took place in October. She was chosen to serve as the Paul Taylor Dance Company’s resident choreographer in March 2022.
