On August 27, 1943, Murtala Hamman-Yero Nyako was born in Mayo-Belwa, Adamawa State.

Nyako was an officer cadet when he enlisted in the Royal Nigerian Navy in June 1963.
He began his officer training at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, England, in September 1963.

Nyako returned to Nigeria in October 1966 and remained there until September 1993, serving in the Nigerian Navy.
