Omawumi Megbele, popularly known as Omawumi, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter and actress. She was born on April 13, 1982 in Warri, Delta State, Nigeria. Omawumi is one of the most prominent Nigerian female musicians with an incredible vocal range.
Early Life and Education
Omawumi was raised in the Warri region of Delta State, Nigeria. She attended Nana Primary School and later, College of Education Demonstration Secondary School. In 2005, she obtained a law degree from the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Nigeria.
Career
Omawumi started her music career in 2007 as a contestant on the TV reality show, West African Idols. Although she didn’t win the competition, she gained popularity and garnered a loyal fanbase. In 2008, she released her debut album, “Wonder Woman”, under the record label, Westside Music.
Omawumi has since released many hit songs such as “If You Ask Me”, “Bottom Belle” and “Megbele”. She has also won several awards including the Nigerian Entertainment Award for Best Female Vocalist in 2011 and City People Entertainment Awards for Female Musician of the Year in 2016.
