Born on January 1st, 1950, in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, Nigeria, Prince Nico Mbarga was a renowned musician and songwriter. His father was a Nigerian soldier and his mother a seamstress. He grew up in Ikom, Cross River State, and had his primary education at Ikom Primary School. He later went to Hope Waddell Training Institution, Calabar, for his secondary education.
Career
Prince Nico Mbarga’s music career started in the 1970s when he formed a band, Rocafil Jazz, with his brother. The band later released their first song, “Meka Sika”, which became a hit in Ghana. He gained international recognition in 1976 when he released “Sweet Mother”, which went on to sell over 13 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling African songs ever.
He created his own record label, Rogers All Stars, in 1979, and continued to create music that blended Highlife and Makossa music styles. Some of his notable songs include “Aki Special”, “Simple Arithmetic”, “Family Movement”, and “Christiana”.
